Ten Mile Bay (N56 29’ / W61 37’)
A The Labrador Inuit Development Corporation, which is the economic wing of
the Nunatsiavut Government, has operated Torngait Ujaganniavingit Corporation, or TUC, and the Ten Mile Bay, Paul’s Island anorthosite quarry, since 1992. The anorthosite quarried at Ten Mile Bay is known international as “Blue Eyes” because of its unique color and appearance. It is found nowhere else on the planet.
TUC has been trading blocks of “Blue Eyes” tm to the world’s Natural Stone Industry marketplace ever since 1992. LIDC owns a 51 per cent partnership with Italian-based Tunnet Inc., which has its global headquarters in Nain.
TUC usually expects to employ between 15 and 25 Inuit quarry workers each and every year at the quarry site. Employees either avail of the half hour commute back and forth from the Inuit community of Nain on our own passenger boat, INNUTTATIK, or live at our North Camp, 5 minutes across the Bay.
For three years, LIDC operated a 3200 sq.ft. stone processing plant at Ten Mile Bay North, Paul’s Island, which commenced production in September, 2001 and ended in 2004. The plant used 2nd choice blocks from Ten Mile Bay and Igiak quarries, to process unpolished stone strips for the Italian/Global tile and countertop markets.
